Philippines investigates bomb chemicals in rice cargo Vietnam

Philippine authorities are investigating a cargo of rice from Vietnam that was found to have been mixed with chemicals that can be used to make bombs.

Authorities found at least 50 sacks of ammonium sulphate among a cargo of more than 70,000 sacks of rice.

Anti-illegal drugs agents initially thought the substance was an ingredient for methamphetamine hydrochloride but after tests found it to be a fertiliser which can be used to make explosives.

Agriculture officials insist they did not order fertiliser to go with the rice shipment.

The shipment arrived in the central Philippines aboard the Vietnamese vessel M.V. Trai Thien 66.

Customs officials have barred the ship from leaving port pending the investigation.
