  • THE GRAND NATIONAL FLAG OF THE REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
This grand National Flag of the former Republic of Vietnam (South) flew, up till 30.4.1975 in front of the Embassy of the Republic of Vietnam in Washington, D.C; USA, representing the people and the Republic of Vietnam in the USA until the communist north Vietnamese armed forces aggressed and took over South Vietnam on April 30th 1975, in flagrant violation of the Paris International Peace Accords of January 1973.

This unique Flag, made of special rare silk from South Vietnam is 25ft long by 15Ft large, weighs 13lbs and has a surface area of more than 375 sq Ft (roughly 42M2).

It is now preserved as a national Treasure at Fresno Discovery Museum, Cal; USA and continues to symbolize the sacred spirit of Freedom and Democracy for the free Vietnamese inside and outside of Vietnam.

It has been brought from California; USA to Geneva; Switzerland to signify the support to the cause of freedom and Human Rights in Vietnam on the occasion of the Universal Periodic Review of the Communist Vietnamese government’s catastrophic performance in human rights by the UN HR Commission on May 8th 2009.

On this occasion, the representatives of the Free Vietnamese Community from the entire world is holding a Grand Meeting at the Place des Nations; in front of the UN Headquarters to denounce the flagrant and characterized violation of the liberties and human rights of the people of Vietnam by the communist Hanoi Administration.

The presence among them of this National Grand Flag is a sacred token of support for the cause of freedom and Justice and a message of hope and love to the people inside Vietnam, still under communist brutal rule.

Its presence today should stimulate the spirit of Unity among the free Vietnamese all over the world so as to create a strong force for freedom; the rule of law and justice, capable of working together with like minded forces inside Vietnam to build an open; free, clean and good government in the service of the now much impoverished population so that Vietnam may soon evolve into a state of law, prosperous and strong and well respected in the world.

The national Grand Flag carries with it the ardent desire and hope that it will soon be able to return to Vietnam alongside the free Vietnamese to accompany them in their action for Freedom, the Rule of Law; economic prosperity and justice for all and fraternity among all Vietnamese except for criminals and traitors who will be dealt with legally ,severely but justly by a National Commission for Justice and Reconciliation.

Its transfer to Geneva is made possible thanks to the generous initiative and donation the author of which has requested not to be named at this stage. This donation has enabled the Fresno Discovery Museum to cooperate with the HOI VAN HOA NGUOI VIET TU DO (The Free Vietnamese Society For Culture; chaired by M. DINH Lam Thanh; Paris, France) to bring it to Geneva, among you all on this Historic Day.
    Geneva, May 8th 2009.
