A NEW war memorial in Bonnyrigg has been approved by Fairfield Council in spite of an objection from Vietnam'c consul-general.

The council gave approval for the memoriel to be placed in the car park of the Vietnamese Refugees Community and Culture Centre.

The consul-general of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam had lodged a submission against the memorial.

His submission raised the concerne that "the monument might disturb the recently signed comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Australia as well as affecting a desired closer friendship between the Vietnamese and Australian people".

The council's Independent Development Assessment Committee assesed the submission and objection and voted in favour of the applicant, the Vietnam Community in Australia.

Tri Vo, the president of the NSW chapter of VCA, was pleased that the council approved the memorial.

"Fairfield Council really supportedand it is good to get approveal and backing for this memorial," Mr Vo said. "As refugees from Vietnam, we do not recognise the current regime and, therefore, we are glad that the council did not act on its objection".

Mr Vo said he was happy to be working in a "democratic country with proper process".

"This is the beauty of a free country like Australia," he said.

All four side of monument will commorate different parties - the Vietnamese Community in Australia, the South Vietnamese Army and boat people.

The war memorial has already been designed. Work on the building will begin in the near future.

The boat people's logo will be featured on one side of the monument with these word:

"To commemorate those who are sacrificed there lives on the seas and in the jungles during their attempts to escape the Vietnamese communist regime in searc of freedom."
